Lovesong

The Cure had a lot of pop hits in the 80s and early 90s. Their songs were actually really well crafted and lend themselves to different interpretations.

Adele did a cover of “Lovesong” that really showcased the harmonic and lyric beauty of the song. One of my students asked me to show him how to play that version, so I decided to make a tutorial.

In the first video, I show you the performance. Because I knew that I’d be teaching this version, I kept it very simple and relatively short. You can repeat sections according to your preference and even add flourishes wherever you want. That’s what I would do if I were actually performing the piece.

Here is the tutorial for the first part of the song. I broke down the rhythm into counts of 4 so that I could explain where the right hand and left hand notes land in relation to one another. It is a bit of a challenge to keep the left hand on the beat while the right hand plays the melody, but with practice, you can do it. Make sure that your left hand is really comfortable playing its part before playing hands together.
